Mike Brown - Music/Marching Judge

Mike Brown began his teaching career in 1993 in the Lewisville Independent School District. Mr. Brown is currently serving as the Director of Bands at Shadow Ridge Middle School. During his tenure in the Lewisville ISD, Mike has also held the positions of Director of Bands at Flower Mound HS and Chair of the Fine Arts Department, Associate Director of Bands at Marcus High School and Associate Director of Bands at Lewisville HS.

Mr. Brown’s ensembles have consistently earned the UIL Sweepstake Award and have been named “Best in Class” at numerous festivals. While serving as the Director of Bands at Flower Mound High School, the Flower Mound High School Wind Symphony was invited to perform at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, and was also a state Honor Band finalist

During Flower Mound High School’s inaugural year, Mike was selected as the Teacher of the Year. In 2003, Mr. Brown was chosen as the Phi Beta Mu “Outstanding Young Bandmaster”. In the same year, Mike appeared as the October 2003 cover story of the School Band and Orchestra Magazine titled "Mike Brown: Keeping the Competitive Edge". Mike has also been named to “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”.

Mike Brown serves as an active clinician an adjudicator throughout the state of Texas. Mr. Brown’s professional affiliations include:

Phi Beta Mu (an International School Bandmaster Fraternity)
Kappa Kappa Psi (a National Band Service Fraternity).

Mike resides in Flower Mound, Texas with his wife Elizabeth and his two sons, Cameron and Weston.

 

Dick Clardy - Music/Marching Judge

Dick Clardy is the Executive Director of Choice Music Events. Choice Music Events is a not-or-profit organization that plans and hosts music festivals and events all over the United States. Mr. Clardy was recently the Director of Bands and the Department Chair of Fine Arts at Klein High School in Klein, Texas from 2001 though 2007.

Mr. Clardy is a native Texan, having begun his musical career under the direction of J. R. McEntyre in the Permian High School Band and Orchestra. Mr. Clardy received the Bachelor of Music Education Degree from West Texas State University, a Master of Music Degree in Applied Trumpet from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and has done Doctoral work at The University of North Texas.

In 1977, Mr. Clardy began his teaching career in his hometown of Odessa, Texas, with Bill Dean, at Odessa High School. Prior to his appointment to Klein High School, Mr. Clardy spent fifteen years developing the band and orchestra program at The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas. Bands under Mr. Clardy’s direction have performed at the Midwest Clinic in 1994, the TMEA Convention-Clinic as the TMEA Class 5A Honor Band in 1997, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade in 1997, the Midwest Clinic in 1998, the American Bandmasters Association Convention in Austin in 2000, the Chicago Symphony Hall in 2004 and Carnegie Hall in 2001 and 2006. The John Philip Sousa Foundation honored The Colony Band with The Sudler Flag of Honor in 1994. Bands under Mr. Clardy’s direction have been named Best In Class at every major Concert Band Festival in the country and have been consistent participants in the Texas State UIL Marching Contest since 1988 and a top 5 finish in the TMEA Honor Band process since 1986. Composers that have been commissioned by Mr. Clardy for new works for band include Dan Welcher, Martin Mailman, Eric Richards and Eric Whitacre. The Klein Marching Band recently advanced and competed in the 2004 and 2006 Texas State UIL Marching Contest. The Grammy Foundation selected the Klein High School Fine Arts Department as a Signature School in 2000 and 2004.

Mr. Clardy is an active performing musician, clinician and conductor. He has recently guest conducted the United States Army Field Band of Washington, D.C., the University of Florida Wind Symphony and is the newly appointed conductor of the Lubbock Concert Band.

Mr. Clardy was named Teacher of the Year in 1988-1989 and also honored by the Parent Teacher Association as a Lifetime Member. Mr. Clardy served the Texas Music Educators Association as the President in 2000, as the State Band Division Chair from 1998-1999, and as the State Audition Chairman from 1993 to 1997. Mr. Clardy was elected for membership into the prestigious The American Bandmasters Association in 1997 and currently serves on the ABA/Ostwald Band Composition Adjudication Committee. Mr. Clardy is a member of Phi Beta Mu and received the Meritorious Service Award from the Texas Bandmasters Association in 2005.

 

Randy Vaughn - Music/Marching Judge

Randy Vaughn began his music career with the Gattis Junior High Band under the direction of Harold VanWinkle in Clovis, New Mexico. At Clovis High School, his band director was Norvel Howell. During this time he studied private flute with Ted Raven. Mr. Vaughn is a 1968 graduate of West Texas State University with a Bachelor of Music Education. While at WTSU, his band director and private flute instructor was Dr. Gary Garner. Later in his career, he also received instruction from
Mr. Eddie Green at the University of Houston. He has received wonderful support from Cindy, his wife of thirty-one years.

Mr. Vaughn retired in 2001 after thirty-four years in the Texas public schools. Previous experience includes positions at Klein High School and Strack Intermediate School (Klein ISD), Hereford High School and Stanton Junior High School (Hereford ISD) and Claude High School (Claude ISD). Mr. Vaughn's bands have been recognized statewide and nationally for their musical excellence. They have earned 32 UIL sweepstakes awards as well as other top honors at prestigious festivals. Some of these include the Bands of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis, the Texas AAAAA State Marching Band Competition and the Texas AAAAA Honor Band competition, the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Chicago, performances at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

In 2002, Mr. Vaughn was awarded the Lifetime Meritorious Achievement Award by the Texas Bandmasters Association.
Mr. Vaughn's professional affiliations include, TMEA, Phi Beta Mu, TMAA and is a past president of the Texas Bandmasters Association. He maintains a busy schedule as clinician, guest conductor and adjudicator across the United States.

 

Brian Youngblood - Music/Marching Judge

Brian Youngblood is the Associate Director of Bands at TCU. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Abilene Christian University and his Master of Percussion Performance degree from East Texas State University. Before coming to TCU, he taught in the public schools for twelve years. He spent his first ten years teaching in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD at L.D. Bell High School where his groups received recognition for outstanding performances at festivals throughout Texas. Mr. Youngblood has also served on the faculties at the Texas Tech Band Camp, University of North Texas Drum Line Camp, and Stephen F. Austin Summer Percussion Camp. He is active as a drill writer, an arranger for marching band/percussion, and as a clinician and adjudicator. He regularly consults with and writes shows for 20 high school bands in the five state region. His drills won three state championships and placed in the finals at many festivals in the 2000 competitive season. His ensemble responsibilities at TCU include the Horned Frog Marching Band, the Symphonic Band, and the Men's and Women's Basketball Bands.

 

Doug Henderson - Colorguard Judge

Doug Henderson is an Instructor, designer, and adjudicator with over 20 years of experience in the competitive pageantry activity. He has many years of experience as a national adjudicator for several associations including Winter Guard International. He has adjudicated and designed for several associations and marching bands throughout the south, east, and Midwest. Mr. Henderson designed for the State of Mississippi Lion’s Band from 1990-2000 and the Greenville High School and Grenada High School marching bands for their Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade appearances. Currently, he adjudicates equipment for Winter Guard International and is a member of the Texas Colorguard Judges Association and the Florida Federation of Colorguard Judges Association. He resides in Plano, TX where he is a consultant with Countrywide Financial Corporation.
